“We have to look to the past and get back to some basic principles if there is going to be any future worth having.”
We live in a post-truth culture. “Post-truthers” may even stipulate to your truth. The truth doesn’t matter to them. What takes priority is their feelings and emotions and their autonomy. This is why you have safe zones on campuses, and truth-filled ideas don’t matter even in the halls of Congress. It’s about autonomy.
From “auto” meaning “self,” and “nomos” meaning “law,” self-law is what those who don’t care about truth want now. They attain this self-law in only one way—not by the content of their character, or the strength of their ideas, but by raw power. Mob power is all they require to choose the consequences of their actions. But that is a lie from our mutual enemy Satan. God allows us free choice to love Him or not. God does not grant us the freedom to choose the consequences of our actions. Those consequences will always be there.
And yet, in their quest for autonomy, those who don’t care about the truth—or God—are legislating to change the consequences of their actions. They’re legislating infanticide for their children, recreational drugs for themselves, mandatory anti-God indoctrination for all who attend schools, the wanton abandonment of our nation under God, and the stifling of religious speech and practice in the public square. It used to be that conservatives were criticized for trying to legislate morality. Conservatives were told that it couldn’t be done. Now, legislating morality is the post-truthers’ favorite pastime.
They’re blatant about it, without apology. There are ad campaigns of women “celebrating” their abortions. The media seems to report only the salacious, and the outlandish, with attacks on what they perceive as the conservative, anti-news God. Our culture has devolved into one that pits power against power. This is what happens when you quibble about what the meaning of the word “is” is. This is what happens when you reject God to the point of making His Word hate speech. This is what happens when you claim wrong is right and bad is good. So for those who don’t care about the truth, I have some questions for you.
How much time do we have left? How long is it going to take for someone to confront you with more power than you have? How long can our culture survive in a power vs. power confrontation when no moral authority is given any weight and there is no right or wrong? Can’t you see how our mutual enemy Satan is having a field day with this? Is Civil War II the ultimate end to the American experiment, or will we come to our senses, look to the past, and get back to some basic principles of what is right and wrong, good and bad, love and evil?
On this Easter Sunday, I am concluding this series on a somber note. In the days leading up to this, I have already made the case for the existence of a God who loves, a God you can trust, and a God whose Son lives. I made the case why it would be reasonable for you to live as if there is a God. For so many today, Easter is the promise of a future worth having. Still, many of you have turned away from God. I cannot stop the evil that will result from your choice. But, don’t blame that evil on God. That wasn’t His idea. He loves you.
What prevents post-truthers from choosing to adhere to basic principles of right and wrong, moral law, and therefore a moral law giver? Just this once, what prevents you from looking to the past for the answer? Time is of the essence.
Will this autonomy really lead you to a future worth having? The choice is yours. Those of us who believe in God and find in Him our moral authority already made our choice. For now, there’s still time to choose. I just can’t tell you how much time you have left. Power will ultimately fail you, but time is real. Death is certain. And the Bible says we will all meet God someday. How’s that going to go for you?
Choose for Him today and don’t put it off. He loves you and places upon you infinite value and worth. He’s waiting for your choice. Is there not a better time than on Easter Sunday?
Thank you for reading today and this week. May God bless you with His truth.
He is risen. He is risen indeed!
