Why do some people leave it to others to tell them what to do? Sometimes it seems they don’t really care about what truth is, and instead just want to know what’s in it for them.
TV shows make fun of those who decide for themselves what truth is. Our culture routinely ridicules those who follow Biblical principles in their lives—from Tim Tebow to Christian conservatives to those who are just trying to raise their children in a culture hostile to God-fearing families. Instead, TV shows celebrate people who want to do what they darn well want to do when they darn well want to do it, regardless of the impact on others. That’s freedom, right?
That’s why today’s March for Life will only be a sidebar story or a back-page brief in mainstream media. Who wants to run a story on a bunch of people advocating for truth?
There is one story you won’t read about any day. You see, someday you and I are going to die. That may not seem fair to you but there’s not a more level playing field in life than death. Now that’s called equality. That’s called natural law and is an absolute truth that affects us all equally, rich or poor, young and old, republican or democrat.
Look, fortune is different from natural law in that it smiles on some and not others. Fortune is not fair and will never be fair. Lottery winners know this. A lot more lottery losers know this. Those who have lost loved ones defending our country know this. I’m one of those.
And yet we have so many people trying to sell us “fairness” like it’s something we can vote for. We have so many pleasure philosophers out there telling you it’s just “not fair” because you can’t darn well do what you darn well want to do when you darn well want to do it, regardless of the impact on others. Still, they can’t legislate fortune any more than I can win the lottery (although to be completely honest, I don’t play the lottery). There are the fortunate and those who are less so. You can’t legislate fortune any more than you can make everything in life fair.
That’s the difference between the March for Life in Washington today advocating truth, and the marchers last weekend who were advocating . . . well I’m not quite sure what they were advocating, other than “fairness.”
The true truth is no one can control fortune and life will never be fair. Some have understood this and become fortunate because of it. But they didn’t acquire wealth or influence by having someone tell them how to live, what to believe, or how to vote. They earned it the “old-fashioned” way. They decided for themselves what true truth is and applied that to their lives—in many cases successfully.
Life is precious and should be protected in all of its innocent stages. If you disagree with me, and marched for “fairness” last week, the true truth is life is not fair. And, that is never more true than for the baby who doesn’t survive.
