Scientists think they discovered the electro-magnetic spectrum, but God created it. And yet only a very narrow band of the entire spectrum is comprised of things we can see — visible light. What’s going on in the rest of it?
On what bandwidth is God communicating with His angels as they engage the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 6:12)? We are told the Holy Spirit intercedes for us in groanings for things and in ways that we can’t understand (Romans 8:26). On what bandwidth is that occurring?
Peter, James and John clearly heard the voice of God from the bright cloud on Mount Herman (Matthew 17:5). I don’t know what frequency He was on, but those three didn’t have to “tune-in” to hear. And I think young people, in a similar way, just want to hear from God but are trying unsuccessfully to “tune-in” to hear from Him. God uses the electro-magnetic spectrum to speak to us clearly and loudly and I don’t think He’s up there wondering if we’re ever going to hear Him. He wants us to connect with Him personally. Perhaps we just need to listen and let God choose the frequency.
I have described the promised Holy Spirit as someone who inhabits believers in Jesus Christ and acts like an aircraft transponder—a piece of equipment that constantly broadcasts into the radio spectrum identification data for the aircraft and includes information to aid the aircraft’s safe passage. As I see it, the Holy Spirit within me broadcasts to the heavenlies “in the blind” the message, “This one is mine. He cannot be taken from God’s Hand. Look elsewhere” to whomever might be prowling around for me. I don’t know where on the spectrum those transmissions occur, but I sleep better at night knowing He is interceding for me.
Perhaps that is why God thought the manger and the birth and the stable and the smells and the shepherds and the regally low estate would be so, so special. It was occurring in a very narrow bandwidth of the entire electro-magnetic spectrum, and yet one that would allow us to see and sense and talk with and learn from the King of Kings and Lord of Lords; indeed, God’s own Son, Jesus Christ.
As you consider the electro-magnetic spectrum, perhaps these Truths from the Bible become even more real to you at Christmas:
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. (Isaiah 9:2)
And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. (1 John 1:4-5)
