People may have wondered why we go through the expense for such a lavish dinner on Christmas Day. Affectionately known in our house as “Roast Beast,” the prime rib we serve is arguably the most expensive dinner we prepare all year. Why then, when our Savior entered the world in such a “low estate,” do we go all out at the dinner table?

The answer is simple, and one we remind ourselves during the pre-dinner prayer.

God places infinite value on those who believe in His son Jesus Christ.  The value of anything depends upon what someone is willing to pay for it.  God was willing to sacrifice His only son Jesus Christ so that we can approach a Holy God.  It is still incomprehensible to me that God would be willing to pay that infinite price for someone like me who has disobeyed Him, and ignored Him, and once doubted Him. And yet, He still paid it for me. This is why we celebrate Christmas.

So, on the day we celebrate Jesus’s arrival on earth, we set before us a table and serve a meal that is fit for the King of Kings.  The love the Christ has lavished on us is sensed in that meal.  And, we remember it all year long when we thank Him for our provision.  He is the source of our everything, but especially so on Christmas.
