Will Adam and Eve be in Heaven?

Thank you for your question and there are a couple of aspects to this question that I will address.

As you are a believer, I’m going to assume that you believe Heaven exists.  For non-believers, this is a huge theological issue and construct.

I’m convinced that Heaven is a place where we were originally meant to be.  And, if you had picked anyone other than Adam and Eve to consider, it would be a little easier to answer your question.  I’m convinced the only two humans on Earth who have likely experienced what Heaven is like are Adam and Eve.  God had placed them in the Garden of Eden.  Much like Heaven is for us, the Garden was where they were meant to be.

God created us for the purpose of worshipping Him and dwelling with Him and having a personal relationship with Him.  I’m convinced that we all have a longing deep down in our souls for our Heavenly home.  I’m equally convinced that we have a sense that things here on Earth are not as they should be.  For us, Heaven is where we were meant to be.  C.S. Lewis puts it best when he says that we all have a longing for the “far green country.”

Having known the Garden, did Adam and Eve share in this longing for where they were meant to be?  Having experienced the Garden, my sense is that they did.  For them, looking ahead to Heaven was probably like looking back at the Garden.  Still, I’m sure their longings were intact.

Do we lump Adam and Eve into the category called “the unreached” or perhaps “young children” or others who have not heard the Gospel message?  These raise other significant theological constructs as well.  But as to who gets into Heaven and who doesn’t, we know this.  It is God who justifies (Romans 8:34).

So, to your question, I’m confident in saying that God has not told us exactly how He is going to judge every category of unreached person—including Adam and Eve, who likely comprise a category of their own.  Ultimately, I think you and I must answer a more fundamental question: “Can I trust that God will do what is right and fair?”  And I think we can say “yes” to that question because you and I have experienced the love of Christ.

To summarize:

  1. God has ordained history so that people might reach out and find him (Acts 17:26 – 27).
  2. On the day of judgment, God will judge each person according to the knowledge they have and the thoughts of their own hearts (Romans 2:14 – 16).
  3. We can trust that the judge of all the earth will do what is right (Genesis 18:25) because He has proven His love for us in Jesus (Romans 5:8).

We may all have our conceptions of what Heaven may be like, but there remains one arbiter as to who gets to Heaven.  Praise God that you and I are covered by the precious sacrifice of our Savior Jesus Christ.
